Paraninfo

La Antigua Facultad de Medicina y Ciencias y Paraninfo Universitario, es una de las obras más conseguidas del arquitecto Ricardo Magdalena. Edificio que responde a la tendencia historicista de la época, en que se retoman los mo de los palacios aragoneses renacentistas. Siguiendo esta tradición se realiza en ladrillo, con aplicaciones de azulejos polícromos y relieves de estuco.

En la portada de piedra destacan cuatro estatuas sedentes que representan a médicos y científicos importantes como Miguel Servet, Andrés Piquer, Ignacio Jordán de Asso y Fausto de Elhuyar.

Todo el conjunto estaba rodeado por una sólida y vistosa verja de hierro, también diseñada por Magdalena, que desapareció en 1904.

Aquí estudió y, ejerció después como profesor, el Premio Nobel de Medicina Don Santiago Ramón y Cajal, recordado en el interior con una escultura de Benlliure realizada en 1923.

El salón de actos por su capacidad y presencia, fue casi desde el primer momento Paraninfo de la Universidad y en él tienen lugar las ceremonias más solemnes: las lecciones inaugurales de cada curso académico, las celebraciones oficiales del día de San Braulio, patrón de la Universidad zaragozana y las investiduras de Doctores Honoris Causa.

The whole set was surrounded by a solid and showy railing of iron, also designed by Sponge-cake, which disappeared in 1904.
