La puerta del Carmen. The gate of Carmen

The gate of Carmen is a monument that one finds of the city of Zaragoza.

Of neoclassic style, the gate of Carmen was constructed in the year 1789 by the architect Agustín Sanz and inaugurated in the year 1792. It was one of twelve doors of entry to the city (four Romans and eight medieval ones) appearing now of form isolated in the Walk Maria Agustín of Zaragoza.

The gate has structure of triumphal Roman arch with a central arch and two lateral minors. Without great architectural interest, it has the historical value to have been a witness of transcendent events for the city. During the war of the sites (1808-1809) the door used as bastion to the Aragonese resistance staying the fingerprints of the still visible missiles in his structure. Also it was the door across which army entered the city 1838 during the First War Carlist.

As anecdotal information, on February 23, 1997 a bus clashed in the dawn with the monument dislocating several ashlars and putting in danger his stability. The gate was suitably restored and, in the summer-house a few protective pieces were added to avoid futures injure. 

The gate of Carmen received the title of national monument in the exhibition Hispanic - French of 1908 and it is Well of Cultural Interest.

La puerta del Carmen es un monumento que se encuentra en la ciudad de Zaragoza.

De estilo neoclásico, la puerta del Carmen fue construida en el año 1789 por el arquitecto Agustín Sanz e inaugurada en el año 1792. Era una de las doce puertas de entrada a la ciudad (cuatro romanas y ocho medievales) mostrándose ahora de forma aislada en el Paseo María Agustín de Zaragoza.

La puerta tiene estructura de arco triunfal romano con un arco central y dos menores laterales. Sin gran interés arquitectónico, tiene el valor histórico de haber sido testigo de acontecimientos trascendentes para la ciudad. Durante la guerra de los sitios (1808-1809) la puerta sirvió de bastión a la resistencia aragonesa quedando las huellas de los proyectiles todavía visibles en su estructura. También fue la puerta a través de la que entró ejército en la ciudad en 1838 durante la Primera Guerra Carlista.

Como dato anecdótico, el 23 de febrero de 1997 un autobús colisionó de madrugada con el monumento desencajando varios sillares y poniendo en peligro su estabilidad. La puerta fue convenientemente restaurada y, en la glorieta se añadieron unas piezas protectoras para evitar futuros accidentes.

La puerta del Carmen recibió el título de monumento nacional en la exposición hispano-francesa de 1908 y es Bien de Interés Cultural.
